Composer Jerry Goldsmith was very busy in 1978. Besides "COMA" he also scored "Capricorn One", "The Swarm", "Damien Omen : II", "Magic" & "The Boys From Brazil." "Coma" was the second film collaboration between Michael Crichton & Goldsmith. Coma is notable for the fact that for the first half of the movie, other than "source" cues, no original music is heard. That would add to the realism that makes "Coma" a very enjoyable film. Other than the melodic love themes for "Coma", Goldsmith relied heavily on stringed instruments for the chilling, metallic feel of the cold hospital environs. The soundtrack was released on LP, cassette and 8-track in 1978. It included most of the music heard in the film, and included a disco version of the love theme-which was typical of soundtracks at the time (ever hear Amityville Frenzy!!??) The soundtrack had its first CD release in 1992 and was re-released with "Logans Run" in 2000. In 2006 Film Score Monthly released a complete CD of the score including the one great cue that was missing on the previous releases : Susans chase through the Jefferson Institute ("Illegal Parking.") |
