A very popular, yet paradoxically hopelessly outdated looking and sounding film. Its hard to get into an "End-of-the-world-as-we-know-it" film with the story stuck squarely in the early 1970's , with Heston watching "Woodstock", Rosalind Cash's "with it" dialogue, and one of the creatures using the word "Honky", not to mention Hestons 8-Track collection. All that aside, this movie does have its strong points. Interesting religious symbolism, great long shots of a deserted L.A., good action set pieces. Based on Richard Matheson's novel "I Am Legend", and filmed previously as "The Last Man On Earth" with Vincent Price. Biological warfare destroys mankind. Scientist Robert Neville has developed an antidote to the plague. The city is overrun with albino-like people who only come out at night, determined to kill Neville. Neville finds "normal" people in his midst. Will mankind survive? Released August 1st, 1971. |
