A Sci-Fi classic from George Pal. Two planets are hurtling towards earth, one will pass close enough to do a whole bunch of damage, the other will collide with Earth. Against world-wide ridicule, a group decides to build a ship to recolonize on the remaining planet. Featuring incredible effects (for its day) and the always intriguing premise of "The End Of The World As We Know It", this film featured earthquakes, tidal waves, exploding volcanoes, and the title cataclysm. The only weakness was the script, using the 1950s standard studio imposed love story to keep the girls in the audience amused. The film was released in August, 1951. Nominated for two Oscars, it won one for Best Effects. A remake is being planned (what else is new in Hollywood?!) for 2006 |
