ABANDON SHIP
(1957)
When the Crescent Star hits a derelict mine and sinks, 27 survivors crowd into a lifeboat designed to only carry 14. Executive Officer Alex Holmes (Tyrone Power) takes charge and is forced into the horrible position of deciding who can stay and who must go. One by one, the survivors are let go with only the slimmest chance of being picked up by a rescue ship. Ahead of them are days at sea and a fierce storm. In the tradition of Hitchcocks "Lifeboat" this is a great character study, but this is a much more disturbing tale, even more disturbing is the fact that it derives its plot from a true story. Shown in England as "Seven Waves Away".
