THE ABYSS
(1989)
A strangely neglected film from James Cameron. When a U.S. nuclear submarine crashes, a team of deep-sea drillers is hired to assist in the recovery/inspection of the wreck. While probing the depths, the drillers and Navy Seals have an encounter with seemingly friendly aliens. It turns out the aliens have a message for the world. A smart and technically great film, it has gotten a second life in home video with the inclusion of 28 minutes of missing footage, notably a world-wide tidal wave. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards, winning one for Visual Effects.
