Made on a budget of $10,000,000, and taking in over $45,000,000 at the box office, this is the movie that kicked off the disaster movie trend of the 1970's. With an all star cast including Burt Lancaster, Dean Martin, Jacqueline Bisset, this movie was a "Grand Hotel" with wings. From a best selling book by Arthur Haley, who had presented it as a TV movie years earlier. The story concerns the efforts of the crew and management of a Trans-Global jet to stop a desperate bomber from bringing the jet down, so his wife will be set for life. The film was released March 5th, 1970 and was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning one for Helen Hayes' great performance as a stowaway. Ironically, the jet used for the exteriors crashed during a takeoff in 1989. |
