The first (and considered best) of 2 comet hitting the Earth movies released in 1998. These movies owe more than a little bit to "When Worlds Collide". Deep Impact is alot more character driven than Armageddon, released 2 months later. A young science student discovers what he believes is a new star, but turns out to be a comet, heading for Earth. He sends his findings to a reclusive scientist, who dies while on his way to alert the world. A year later, a Wahington DC reporter stumbles on the story, and gets the story out. The decsion is made to send a team up to intercept the comet, and destroy it before it hits earth. They destroy part of it, and a splinter hits Earth, causing wide destruction on the East Coast of America. The shuttle team now scramble to try to find a way to stop the main part of the comet, before it causes another ice age. The movie stars Morgan Freeman as The President, Elijah Wood as the student, Robert Duvall as the lead astronaut, and Tea Leoni as the reporter. Released May 8th, 1998. |
