This John Wayne classic has long been out of circulation, but remains a popular classic. When a Trans-Orient-Pacific flight leaves Honolulu, it has an odd assortment of characters aboard. The Co-Pilot is the troubled Dan Roman(John Wayne). When all the problems of the passengers and crew reach there boiling point, one of the planes engine catches fire and dangles from the wing. When the pilot, John Sullivan (Robert Stack) gets hysterical, its up to Dan Roman to take charge and try to land the plane. The film was released July 3rd, 1954 and was nominated for 5 Oscars, winning one for best music score. The film was finally released in a restored version in 2005. Many people reviewing it today can not understand what is so great about this movie. While most educated film critics agree that there is a bit too much exposition, it must be said that in 1954 people didn't need quick cutting, and hi-tech gadgetry to make a good movie.
