I AM LEGEND
(2007)
This would be the 3rd telling of Richard Matheson's 1954 novel. The first was the 1964 version "The Last Man On Earth" with Vincent Price, followed in 1971 as "The Omega Man" starring Charlton Heston.
In the very near future, a supposed cure for cancer ends up wiping out all of humanity. Lone Army scientist Robert Neville (Will Smith) is hell bent on finding a cure. Having somehow survived the plague, Neville has refused to leave New York, considering it "Ground Zero" for the plague.
His lives in isolation, save for his dog. Also "living" in NYC are disease ravaged mutants who live by night. When a woman and her son rescue Neville from an attack from the mutants, Neville begins to realize that there might be hope for mankind.
The movie as a whole is a let-down. It does have many cool shots of deserted New York City . The evacuation scenes are also very effective.
The mutant FX are poorly done considering how far CGI has come. The mutant/vampire angle doesnt serve much of a purpose, except to set up certain scenes of action/suspense. How exactly DID they get super-human strength?
The special edition DVD has a more upbeat ending.
