It has always been assumed that Albert Whitlock painted this image. He didn't, as it turns out. It is a backdrop used only in the stairway/rescue scene. It was actually painted by J.C. Backings in Culver City, Ca. A facsimile of it is apparently on display at Universal, Orlando. If you look at the image at the top and compare it to the picture below, there are subtle differences - mainly in the tallest office building on the right, and the crack in the collapsed freeway. Was their 2 backings? Did they alter it for later shots? The one on top is the image most commonly seen in publicity shots.
