THE RAINS CAME
(1939)
The first of two films based on Louis Bromfield's epic novel. The film starred Tyrone Power as a rich surgeon, returning to his native India. Myrna Loy played against type as a spoiled rich girl, Lady Esketh. The movie is standard Big Studio Drama until the titular weather comes on full force. The finale has everything that you would expect: earthquakes, dam bursting, massive floods and chaos. The film was released September 8th, 1939. Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, it won one in the category of "Special Effects", the first film to win in the new category. Remade as "The Rains of Ranchipur" in 1955.
