| Sometimes (cruelly) referred to "When Irwins Career Ran Out", this was disaster-master Irwin Allens last stab at a theatrical run. Bringing together players from other disaster movies (mostly his own): Paul Newman, William Holden and Irwins wife, Sheila Matthews from "The Towering Inferno", Red Buttons and Ernest Borgnine from "The Poseidon Adventure", "Airports" Jacqueline Bisset and from "Beyond The Poseidon Adventure", Veronica Hamel. Thrown in for good measure was B movie veterans Burgess Meredith, James Franciscus and Eddie Albert, Jr. On a lush tropical island,Shelby Gilmore (William Holden) has built the worlds tallest building...ooops..wrong movie.....he has built a grand tropical resort. Hes sharing the attentions of Miss Bisset (young enough to be his grand-daughter) with Hank Henderson (Paul Newman-old enough to be her father) Things start heating up on the island when local gal Barbara Carrera starts fooling around with Bob Spangler (Franciscus), even though shes been promised to Native boy, Eddie Albert Jr. Hank and Bob decide to inspect the local volcano, in a glass bottom elevator. Suddenly, the volcano springs awake, and we are told that jeapordy is in the air with closeups of alarms clanging "MALFUNCTION", and Bob screaming about heat shields. Just barely escapeing the first round of cheesy effects, Hank declares "This thing's a powder keg". Most smart people would have left the island, but Hank decides a picnic with his daughter-like girlfriend would suite the mood better. She tells him that she gets drunk on him and they kiss...and the volcano explodes! They make there way back to the hotel to try an evacuation, but in the bored "I'm only saying this because its in the script" manner that she delivers it, no one believes them. We are treated to very tacky late 70's effects like tidal waves, belching fire balls..and death by falling tiki. A few hardy souls try to reach the safety of the propeller shafts....other side of the island, led by Newman and Bisset. This movie tanked at the box office, but a longer version IS available on home video |
